About Me
I’m Melissa, a writer, survivor, advocate, and lifelong observer of the details most people overlook.
Becoming Unboxed grew from a life shaped by unusually difficult and complicated circumstances—experiences often gathered under one word: trauma. For years, I carried those experiences quietly while trying to survive, work, raise a family, rebuild, and make sense of what had happened to me.
Writing became the place where I could finally put words around what once had none.
Here, I write about memory, survival, institutional betrayal, justice, healing, and the difficult process of becoming more than what happened to us. My stories begin with my own life, but they are not meant to end there.
My hope is that something in these words helps another person feel seen, understood, or less alone. You may not recognize yourself in the exact circumstances of my story, but perhaps you will recognize the struggle to be heard, the fear of being forgotten, or the desire to reclaim a life that trauma tried to define.
Becoming Unboxed is where I tell the truth, continue healing, and make room for others to do the same.
